The clinical crown length of both canines is similar, but their wearpatterns may be different.A different in their vertical alignment is a frequent finding. The gingival margins and cusp tip of the canines are usually not aligned on the same horizontal level because of asymmetry or cant of the maxilla. As a result, the canine tips are not displayed evenly during a smile and the incisal embrasure progression from central incisor to canine is bilaterally asymmetrical. There seems to be no valid reason to align the cannes on the same horizontal level unless the patient requests perfect alignment;therefore, full surgical correction of the gingival plane is rarely showed to realign the canines unless it is used to compensate for the cant of the maxilla.Another common finding is the difference in buccolingual inclination of the buccal corridors. Therefore,an important role of the canines is to control the effective width of the smile by occluding part of the buccal corridors.
