Before attempting any gingival correction it is preferable to relace deficient crowns with sound temporary restorations for the following reasons.

    1,the shadow of a metal margin or dark root may give the false illusion of a shorter tooth and lead to an error in appreciation of tooth length.

    2,gingival margins may recede after tooth preparation and scaling and result in a slight increase in crown length.

    3,the gingival outline may significantly change as it returns to health;scalloping is increased and marginal tissues regain their knif-edge configuration.Gingival asymmetry or irregularity that was not present initially may also result from this initial preparation and need to be corrected surgically.Therefore,before removing deficient crowns in the anterior region,the patient must be cautioned that plastic periodontal corrections may be eventually required,even though they do not seem to be indicated initially.
