Any unit of a partial denture that rests on a tooth surface to provide vertical support is called a rest. The primary purpose of the rests is to provide vertical support for the partial denture.Rests serve to support the position of a partial denture and to resist movament in a cervical direction. They serve to transmit vertical forces to the abutment teeth and to diract those forces along the long axes of the teeth. It is obvious that for this degree of stability to exist, the rests must be rigid and must receive positive support from the abutment teeth.Rests are designated by the surface of the tooth prepared to receive them, which are occlusal rest, lingual rest and incisor rest.
Generally, the function of rests can be seen as follows:
1,Maintains components in their planned positions.
2,Maintains established occlusal relationships by preventing settling of the denture.
3,Directs and distributes occlusal load to abutment teeth.
4,Prevents impingement of soft tissues.
