In the growth and development period, the tooth anatomy of children changes with age, therefore, the occurrence and development of dental caries in children has its own characteristics.

      Causes of children's susceptibility to dental caries

      1. Enamel of tooth surface is not mature. For the new initiation of deciduous teeth or permanent teeth, the surface enamel is not fully mature, the acid etching ability of early deciduous teeth is poor, acid corrosion is easily through the surface to the deep development.

      2. Low mineralization of deciduous teeth. The formation time of deciduous teeth is short, its mineralization degree is lower than the permanent teeth, so the deciduous teeth resist to caries even worse.  

      3.Anatomical characteristics. The maxillofacial surface of deciduous teeth have many pit and fissures, in the interproximal contact area is large of deciduous teeth, and there is the development gap, these are conducive to food retention, plaque accumulation.

      4.Dietary characteristics. Due to the growth and development of children, they need high-calorie foods and like sugar diet; but with their poor chewing ability, they prefer for soft food and eating more often.

      5.Oral hygiene is poor. Children can not consciously carry out oral hygiene, and parents are often ignored, children brushing lack of guidance and supervision of parents, which is the cause of poor oral hygiene of children. In addition, children's sleep for a long time, the mouth in a quiescent state, less secretion of saliva, is not conducive to oral cleaning.
