    Detailed information about morphological changes of the microbiota during subsequent phases of the accumulation of dnetal plaque is not available.It is believed that,during the early days,plaque growth occurs mainly as a result of cell division,but continuous adsorption of single microorganisms from saliva also contributes to the expansion of the bacterial deposit.In the surface layer of plaque some microorganisms coaggregate with other species,as visualized by the presence of so called "corn cob" structures.The "corn cob" are composed of a central filament coated with spherical organisms,and appear to have a direct interspcies relationships mediated by surface fibrils.

    As the micobiota grows older,characteristic structural changes are noted deep to the surface.The most striking change is the formation of an inner layer of densely packed gram-positive pleomorphic bacteria next to the tooth surface.These bacteria,which show ultrastructural characteristics in common with Actionomyces species,are found in association with both enamel and root surfaces.The outer part of young bacterial deposits is usually more loosely structured and varies in composition.In some individuals the outer microbiota is mainly organized in spheres of one particular type of organism whereas,in others,layers of defferent bacterial species are organized parallel to the surface.These structural and compositional defferences,combined with differences in the amount of intermicrobial matrix and differences in mineral deposition,are believed to influence the metabolic process and diffusion properties of dnetal plaque.
