Thin anterior gingival tissues are delicate and susceptible to traumatic recession caused by preparations or overcontoured provisional restorations. With high-speed techniques and with the potential of the periodontal probe tip or prepacked retraction cords to pierce the junctional epithelium, the crevice depth can only be presumed because the coronal extent of the junctional epithelium is difficult to identify. It may be inadvertently violated, and a rapid marginal tissue recession may occur within 2 weeks after tooth preparation, possibly leading to a supragingival margin on the day of final cementation.
Therefore, marginal tissue reaction may be unpredictable after preparation and temporization because the gingival tissues may stabilize to a different level. It is preferable with anterior preparations to anticipate this problem by systematically deferring the final impression at least 2 weeks, and in some cases 4 to 6 weeks,to reappraise the level of the finish lines and refine them if necessary.
